MekEngine
A MechWarrior 2 (1995) remake, rebuilt in Unity.
MekEngine loads your original MechWarrior 2 game files and puts the mechs, the menus, the missions and the combat back together in a modern engine.
You'll hear it called a remake, a remaster or a mod, and any of those is fine by me. Technically it's a reimplementation: a new engine that reads the original data.
It isn't a perfect 1:1 copy, and it doesn't try to be. The goal is for it to feel the way you remember it.
Latest build, about 68 MB. You'll need your own copy of MechWarrior 2 to play.
What's in it right now
Your original game files
Point it at your own install and it reads the original database, shapes, animations, sounds and videos directly from disk.
The original shell
The main menu, clan hall, ready room, briefings, mech bay and debriefings are rebuilt in the original style, with the original videos and music.
Mechs that walk
Mech models and their animations are loaded from the original data, with extra touches like procedural toe animation on mechs that have ankles.
Combat and explosions
Weapons, projectiles, debris and explosions with dynamic lighting, built on Unity's DOTS so the battlefield stays fast.
Modern graphics
Rendered with HDRP, with optional ray tracing. The graphics options let you turn the fancy stuff down if your machine needs it.
Sound
3D world sounds with the original falloff, and a delay for sound that travels, so a distant explosion reaches you a moment later.
Mods
Drop in loose files to replace the menu music and the world and mech textures, at any resolution. How to make mods
Where it stands
This is an early build. Plenty works, but not everything is finished yet, and I'm sure there are bugs hiding in there somewhere. If you find one, please tell me.
